SCOTCH WHISKY GRANTED CERTIFICATION TRADEMARK IN SOUTH AFRICA

The Scotch Whisky Association, has today announced that it has successfully registered 'Scotch whisky' as a certification trademark in South Africa.

The 'Scotch whisky' trademark is one of the first foreign registrations in South Africa, and now protection and enforcement action against counterfeit products being sold or passed off as Scotch whisky, has now been made easier.

Scotch whisky granted Certification Trademark in South Africa

South Africa, which saw exports of Scotch whisky increase by 20.7% to £144m in 2017, is currently the seventh largest Scotch Whisky market by volume.

The Scotch Whisky Association, says that the legal protection of Scotch whisky is vital to the industry's export success. South Africa joins over one hundred other countries where Scotch whisky has been granted specific legal protection.

Commenting on the news, Karen Betts, SWA Chief Executive, said: "The registration of the 'Scotch Whisky' certification trademark in South Africa is a milestone for Scotland's national drink in our largest export market in Africa, and one of the largest in the world. This registration offers Scotch Whisky a greater degree of legal protection and will allow us to prosecute rogue traders who seek to cash-in on the heritage, craft and quality of genuine Scotch.”

She went onto say: "Consumers can enjoy Scotch Whisky confident that South Africa stands behind Scotch Whisky as a Scottish product, produced according to traditional methods. Scotch Whisky - the UK's largest food and drink export - is growing in popularity in South Africa, with exports up over 20% last year alone. The legal protection of Scotch is another step towards the continued success of this iconic spirit."

Last week, the Scotch Whisky Association, announced the results from their annual survey, which revealed that there were a record 1.9 million visitors to Scotch whisky distilleries in 2017. They also announced that visitor centre spending was up by 15.6% to £60.9m.

JACK DANIEL'S LAUNCHES NEW BOTTLED-IN-BOND TRAVEL RETAIL EXCLUSIVE

Jack Daniel’s, has announced the launch of a new permanent expression, exclusive to global travel retail.

Jack Daniel’s Bottled-in-Bond (50% ABV) which has been charcoal mellowed and matured in new American oak barrels crafted by its own coopers, is said to be a bold Tennessee whiskey, with rich flavours complemented by classic Jack Daniel’s smoothness.
Jack Daniel's Bottled-in-Bond

Whiskey making in the 1800’s too often produced sub-par, counterfeit and even dangerous spirits. Drinkers at times weren’t sure of what exactly they were drinking or being served. To bring a high level of safety and consistency to American whiskies, the United States Congress passed the Bottled in Bond Act, which certified the quality of whiskey carrying that designation.

Whiskey had to be aged at least four years and bottled at 100 proof/50% ABV at one distillery during a single season. The Bottled in Bond Act was passed in 1897. Mr. Jack began putting his Tennessee Whiskey in the now-familiar square bottle two years earlier in 1895. This new release replicates the rules that were set more than 120 years ago.

Commenting on the launch, Marshall Farrer, Senior Vice President and Managing Director Of Brown-Forman Global Travel Retail, said: “One of Jack Daniel’s most famous sayings was, ‘Every day we make it, we’ll make it the best we can,’ and the distillery in Lynchburg has been making the iconic Tennessee whiskey that way every day for over 150 years. In many ways, the introduction of Jack Daniel’s Bottled-in-Bond is a step back into the early days of the distillery when Jack Daniel was pioneering the craft of making Tennessee Whiskey. We think so much of this whiskey that we are making it a permanent member of the Jack Daniel’s Family of Brands – a cautious step we take only with the most special of new products.”

Jack Daniel’s Bottled-in-Bond, will be available later this summer from global travel retail outlets, for a RRP of $37.99.
