William Grant & Sons, has announced the launch of the oldest expression to date, from its Speyside based Balvenie Distillery.

The Balvenie Sixty (42.4% ABV) is 60 Year Old single cask, single malt Scotch whisky, which was distilled in 1962 and matured in a European oak hogshead.

This latest limited-edition release marks the anniversary of Balvenie Malt Master, David C. Stewart MBE, who is celebrating six decades at the distillery – making him the longest serving Malt Master in industry history.

Throughout his time at Balvenie, David has developed unrivalled knowledge and pioneered techniques that have had a profound impact on the whisky making processes used today; most notably his developments around ‘cask finishes’, which led to a new way of creating flavour in whisky and a technique adopted in whisky making the world over.

The single cask was selected by Kelsey McKechnie, who has been mentored by Stewart for the past four years.

Commenting on the whisky, Kelsey said: “On the nose the whisky has a mesmerising array of autumnal aromas; lavender, heather and bracken. Whilst rich toffee, roasted coffee and beautifully layered oak dominate the palate. The flavour evolves with time revealing bursts of cloves, nutmeg, charred oak and candied orange in an exceptional long-lasting finish.”

Limited to 71 bottles, The Balvenie Sixty will be available later this year from select specialist retailers, for a RRP of $145,000.
